The Birth & Development of Newport
A post office with the name of Newport was established in 1868 and the city was officially incorporated in 1882. It became the county seat of Lincoln County in 1952 when the center of government was moved to Newport from the nearby town of Toledo. Due to its location on the coast, the city developed alongside the fishing, hunting, and timber industries. In 2011, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration moved its base from Seattle to Newport.
