Eugene is a city in Oregon located near the confluence of McKenzie River and Willamette River, approximately 50 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. As of the 2010 census, Eugene has a population just over 156,000, making it the second-largest city in the state of Oregon (Portland is first).
Track Town USA
Named after Eugene Franklin Skinner, Eugene is a popular destination due to the its natural beauty, recreational potential (i.e. biking, jogging, rafting, boating, etc.) and the University of Oregon. Since Nike originated in Eugene, the city is sometimes referred to as “Track Town, USA,” and in 2021, Eugene will host the Track and Field World Championships.
A Brief History
Officially incorporated in 1862, Eugene was initially known for its booming timber industry and the aforementioned University of Oregon. John Wesley Johnson was the school’s inaugural president after the university officially opened in 1876. Eugene is surrounded by Skinner Butte, the Coburg Hills, Spencer Butte, Mount Pisgah and foothills to the south, east and west.
Notable employers in Eugene include the University of Oregon, PeaceHealth Medical Group, Lane County, Eugene School District 4J, the U.S. Government, the Springfield School District, the City of Eugene, Lane Community College, the State of Oregon and Walmart. Luckey’s Club Cigar Store is one of the oldest bars in the state of Oregon, having been in business for more than one hundred years.
Eugene is home to numerous festivals each and every year, including the Asian Celebration, the KLCC Microbrew Festival, the Oregon Festival of American Music, the Oregon Bach Festival, the Oregon Country Fair (Veneta), the Lane County Fair, the Eugene/Springfield Pride Festival and the Eugene Celebration. Eugene is also home to the Science Factory’s Children’s Museum & Planetarium, the Eugene Concert Choir, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Oregon Air and Space Museum, Lane County Historical Museum, Maude Kerns Art Center and the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House.
